Find answers to the most common questions about renting a car in Waikiki with First Rent A Car Hawaii, including deposits, payment, parking, locations, driver requirements, insurance, and driving around Oahu.
01 Booking, Deposits & Payment
Do you require a deposit to rent a car in Waikiki?
No. First Rent A Car Hawaii offers zero-deposit rentals — you pay at pickup, and we don't place a large hold on your card. Most rental companies in Honolulu place deposit holds of $200–$500 on top of the rental cost, so this is one of the biggest reasons drivers choose us.
Can I book now and pay later?
Yes. You can reserve your car online with no prepayment — your card isn't charged when you book — and pay when you pick up the vehicle at any of our Waikiki locations. Booking online also unlocks discounts of up to 40% off standard rates.
Can I rent a car with a debit card or without a credit card?
Yes. We accept bank-issued debit cards as well as Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. Prepaid gift cards are not accepted. This makes us one of the few Waikiki rental options for travelers without a credit card.
Can I cancel or change my reservation for free?
Yes — cancellation is free up to 24 hours before your pickup time, per our Terms & Conditions. Your card isn't charged when you book online, so a change of plans costs you nothing. If your flight schedule shifts, you can also adjust your pickup time.
How much does a rental car cost in Waikiki?
Our rentals start from around $59 per day, with online-exclusive discounts of up to 40%, free overnight parking, and unlimited miles included. For comparison, the average rental in Waikiki runs about $90 per day before parking fees — and hotel parking in Waikiki averages roughly $44 per night on top of that.
02 Parking & Locations
Is parking really free with my rental?
Yes. Free overnight parking is included with every First Rent A Car Hawaii rental, at every location, with no conditions. With Waikiki hotels charging $40–$55+ per night for guest parking, free parking can save a typical visitor $200 or more over a one-week trip.
How much does parking normally cost at Waikiki hotels?
Overnight parking at Waikiki hotels averages about $44 per night, and many beachfront hotels charge $50–$60. That's why many visitors either rent by the day or choose a rental that includes free parking — like ours.
Where are your rental locations in Waikiki?
We have three walk-up locations across Waikiki: inside the Waikiki Resort Hotel at 2460 Koa Ave (open daily 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM), one block from Waikiki Beach; inside Hyatt Place Waikiki Beach at 175 Paoakalani Ave (open daily 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM), steps from Kuhio Beach and the Honolulu Zoo on the Diamond Head side; and our newest desk inside The Imperial Hawaii Resort at 205 Lewers St (open daily 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM from September 15, 2026), beside the Halekulani and Waikiki Beach Walk on the west side. Wherever you're staying in Waikiki, one of our desks is a 5–10 minute walk away.
Can I rent a car in Waikiki without going to the airport?
Yes — that's exactly what we're for. All of our locations are inside Waikiki hotels, so you can skip the airport shuttle, the counter lines, and the return-trip hassle. Walk in, pick up your car, and be on the road to the North Shore in minutes. We don't operate an airport counter or one-way airport drop-offs.
Can I return my car outside office hours?
There is no after-hours key drop at our locations, so returns must happen during desk hours: by 9:00 PM at Koa Ave and at The Imperial Hawaii Resort (from Sept 15, 2026) — the latest rental returns in Waikiki — or by 5:00 PM at Hyatt Place. Planning a long day trip? Book at a 9 PM location. Late returns beyond your scheduled time incur a fee of $50 per hour; if you're running late, call us at (808) 439-1929.
03 Driver Requirements
What do I need to rent a car in Hawaii?
You need a valid, unexpired government-issued driver's license with a photo (physical card — digital licenses are not accepted), a credit or bank-issued debit card, and you must be at least 21 years old. The license must be valid for your entire rental period.
Can I rent a car under 25 in Honolulu?
Yes. Drivers aged 21–24 can rent with us for an additional young-renter fee of $40 per day; some specialty vehicle categories are restricted for drivers under 25. Drivers 25+ rent with no age surcharge.
Can I rent with a foreign or international driver's license?
Yes — international visitors rent with us every day. Bring your home-country driver's license (physical card) and your passport; if your license is not in English (for example, Korean or Japanese licenses), bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well.
Can I add an additional driver?
Yes. Additional drivers can be added for $15 per day, and each must meet the same requirements as the primary driver (valid photo license, minimum age 21).
Do I need insurance to rent a car in Hawaii?
Liability insurance is required to operate a vehicle in the State of Hawaii. Coverage options are available at pickup, and your personal auto policy or credit card rental coverage may also apply — check with your provider before your trip.
Do you have car seats, booster seats, or beach gear?
Yes — we stock car seats and booster seats, plus beach chairs, umbrellas, and coolers with ice, so your beach day starts at pickup instead of at a store. Mention what you need when you book and we'll have it ready.
04 Driving Around Oahu
Do I really need a car in Waikiki?
For Waikiki itself — no, it's very walkable. But Oahu's best experiences are outside Waikiki: the North Shore, Hanauma Bay, Lanikai and Kailua beaches, Pearl Harbor, and the Dole Plantation. Most visitors are happiest renting a car for 1–3 sightseeing days rather than the whole trip.
Can I see the North Shore, Pearl Harbor, and Dole Plantation in one day?
Yes. A classic circle-island day from Waikiki covers Pearl Harbor in the morning, Dole Plantation midday, and the North Shore (Haleiwa, Waimea Bay, Sunset Beach) in the afternoon — roughly 100 miles and 3–4 hours of total driving. Pick up at 7:00 AM and you'll have a full day; unlimited miles are included.
Do your rentals include unlimited miles?
Yes. Every rental includes unlimited miles, so you can circle the island as many times as you like at no extra cost.
Can I return the car at the airport or another location?
No — vehicles must be returned to the location where you picked them up. One-way rentals, including Waikiki-to-airport drop-off, are not available.
Is renting in Waikiki more expensive than at Honolulu Airport?
Often it's cheaper once you count everything. Airport rentals add concession fees to the daily rate, plus your time on the shuttle both ways — and you'll still pay $40–$55 per night to park the car at your Waikiki hotel. Renting in Waikiki with free overnight parking included can be more economical for stays where you don't need a car every single day.
